Bologna’s iconic sfoglia takes the field for a good cause

The Bakers’ Association of Bologna and its province renews its support for Race for the Cure: Sfogline take center stage alongside a fundraiser featuring traditional local treats.

Bologna’s famous sfoglia pasta is back on the pitch for a good cause. Once again this year, the Bakers’ Association of Bologna and its province is renewing its participation in Race for the Cure—Komen Italia’s flagship event dedicated to breast cancer prevention and awareness, taking place at Giardini Margherita in Bologna from September 18th to 20th.

This has become a long-standing tradition for the Association: for around 15 years, Bologna’s bakers have stood alongside Race for the Cure, lending their expertise, products, and above all, their commitment to supporting an initiative that brings together thousands of people every year.

This year, that connection is once again rooted in one of the most authentic symbols of Bolognese food culture: hand-rolled sfoglia pasta.

On Saturday, September 19th, from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, the pasta-making turns into a hands-on show as the Association’s Sfogline (master pasta makers) host a live hand-rolled pasta demonstration. Armed with rolling pins, wooden boards, and fresh dough, they’ll share an ancient craft deeply woven into Bologna’s history. But it won’t just be a show to watch: anyone who wants to try can step up and roll out the dough themselves, getting a hands-on taste of one of Bologna’s most iconic culinary traditions. It’s a simple, warm way to turn heritage into a shared experience and pass this delicious craft on to younger generations.

The Association’s efforts continue on Sunday, September 20th, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM at their dedicated stand, where you can pick up traditional raviole pastries and crispy streghe flatbreads in exchange for a donation. Every single cent raised will go directly to Komen Italia, boosting fund-raising efforts for health, prevention, sport, wellness, and solidarity, all to support vital research, early detection, and patient care projects.

For the Bakers’ Association of Bologna and its province, taking part is all about putting their professional and cultural heritage at the service of the community. At its heart, that’s what sfoglia is all about: hands working together, time-honored skills passed down, and people coming together. At Race for the Cure, those values mean even more, turning everyday culinary traditions into a powerful act of solidarity.

So, mark your calendars for September 19th and 20th at Giardini Margherita! Come share some sfoglia, discover the heritage of Bologna’s master bakers, and most importantly, stand together for Komen Italia.

Because when we roll out sfoglia together, it becomes so much more than a traditional dish—it becomes a true act of support.
